Acupuncture

Background

The SCPT Regulatory Bylaws define specialized physical therapy procedures to include Acupuncture, and section 18 of those bylaws prohibits members from performing acupuncture unless they have completed an educational program recognized by the council.

Recognized Educational Programs

• The Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI) Program Certification - Level 1 Exam, including part 1, part 2A and 3A (Note: this is the older course names/ terminology.)
  
  
• The Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI) Program Certification – Certificate of Anatomical Acupuncture Examination, including AA1: Foundations of Anatomical Acupuncture and AA2: Clinical Applications in Anatomical Acupuncture
  
  
• The Certificate Program in Medical Acupuncture, Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta, including the final examination
  
  
• McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program, testing during each Unit; Anatomy Lab Exam; Needling Exam; Live Patient and Assessment Exam
  
  
• A Comprehensive Introduction to Acupuncture: The Art and the Science, including written and practical examinations
  
  

Standards of Practice

Physical therapists who have successfully completed a recognized educational program and are practicing acupuncture are expected to use professional judgment and act within their level of competence.
